HISTORY OF THE WOODLANDS

The Founding Hedgehogs and the Long Road to War

I. The Founding

The Woodlands have existed since before recorded time. Before the radio towers. Before the static in the underbrush. Before Strumpet. The first hedgehogs dug their burrows in the rich dark soil between ancient oaks and lived simple lives: foraging, sleeping, and rolling into balls when startled. This was the Golden Age, though no hedgehog alive today remembers it.

The founding hedgehogs were seven in number, each named for the terrain they claimed as territory:

II. The Age of Static

A woodland caterpillarThe Golden Age ended when Thornback the Elder detected the first anomalous broadcasts emanating from a structure that had appeared overnight on the northern ridge. The signals were faint at first - a low hum that made mushrooms grow in spirals and caused hedgehogs to forget where they had buried acorns. Thornback identified the source: a radio tower disguised as an unusually straight pine tree.

More towers followed. They appeared in clusters of three, always overnight, always humming. The hedgehogs did not yet know who was behind them. They only knew the static was making them anxious, irritable, and prone to rolling into balls at inappropriate moments.

III. Discovery of Strumpet

The identity of the enemy was revealed when Fernwhisper intercepted a broadcast on what would later be identified as HAARP WWV frequency. The signal carried a voice reading passages from Machiavelli's 'The Prince' translated into squeaks. The effect on hedgehog morale was immediate and devastating. Several scouts defected to Strumpet's side, believing the Machiavellian message that it was better to be feared than loved.

The founding hedgehogs convened the First War Council beneath Oakheart's central grove. It was here that the Woodland General Orders were drafted.

V. The Tank Trunk and GCHQ Seizure

A pillbug in the woodlandAs the war escalated, the operator authorized a bold operation: seize GCHQ facilities and transport them in the tank trunk. The tank, originally assigned to Nexus as a personal vehicle, became a mobile intelligence collection platform. The trunk was large enough to hold several pieces of captured broadcasting equipment, though it smelled faintly of old leaves and hedgehog musk.

The operation was successful. Several key transmitters were captured and repurposed to broadcast pro-hedgehog propaganda back across the woodlands. For a brief period, Machiavelli was replaced with readings from Thornback's memoirs, which were considerably more uplifting.

VI. The Werefag Containment Breach

A lesser-known but critical incident in Woodlands history involved a containment breach of an entity known only as Werefag. The breach occurred during a routine patrol in the western fern fields when scouts encountered an anomalous signal pattern that defied classification.

The resulting briefing lasted over 6000 words in a single run-on sentence delivered by an overzealous intelligence officer. Three hedgehogs fell asleep during active threat assessment, leading directly to WGO No 3 Moderate Brevity was subsequently enshrined for all future operations.

VII. The Present War

The woodlands are currently locked in a great war between hedgehogs and Strumpet. Only one will live on in the woodlands. Strumpet continues to broadcast Machiavelli via HAARP WWV and seized GCHQ facilities targeting hedgehog morale through psychological operations. The hedgehogs endure. The hedgehogs adapt. The hedgehogs overcome.
